Just 9 miles to the north of Middle River lies Gunpowder Falls State Park is composed of several unconnected protected areas within the region. One section is located at 2813 Jerusalem road, just 9 miles to the north of Middle River. This vast area contains extremely varied terrain, including several beautiful sections of the Gunpowder river. Within the park there are more than 100 miles of walking trails to explore. The big Gunpowder falls are particularly striking, but every trail offers something unique for you to see. The park also contains a marina, a boat launch, and a general store. You can rent inner tubes to use out on the river. There are also several areas for fishing.
Hammerman Beach Area is another section of Gunpowder Falls State Park that is definitely worth a visit. This beautiful, expansive beach area features golden sand and shallow water that heats up quickly in the summer, making it an ideal spot for swimming. If you are interested in trying the popular new sport of stand-up paddle boarding, there is a rental shop right at the beach. There are also numerous picnic tables for you to enjoy a lunch at with your family. Hammerman Beach area has something for the whole family to enjoy, making it the ideal place to spend a summer afternoon.
The Eastern Regional Park is located at 11723 Eastern Ave in Middle River. This expansive recreation area is the hub for outdoor sports in Middle River, with several baseball and soccer fields. Many popular children’s sports leagues run out of this park. There is an ample parking lot, a well-maintained restroom, and multiple picnic tables for family use. The park also contains a large children’s playground, so it is an excellent place to bring the whole family to.
The Dundee Natural Environment Area is a large parcel of land located to the west of Middle River off of Marshy Point Road. This protected area is the perfect place to look for local wildlife, and it is full of interesting walking trails to explore. The Marshy Point Nature Center is an educational building that seeks to teach children of all ages about the local flora and fauna with interesting displays and information. They offer many special events throughout the year, so be sure to check before you go.
